Danish architect Bjarke Ingels of BIG has unveiled his design for the new 2 World Trade Center in New York. Wow, frankly. News Corp and 21st Century Fox are looking to move in in a rather distant 2020, so Seasonal Cities brings you three of our favourite venues in lofty buildings in the Big Apple in the meantime, lovingly harvested from our Summer 2015 guide to the US city. Because elevation is a revelation.

DRINK – SixtyFive
Somewhat rare for casual New York, T-shirts and trainers and forbidden here, but then it is one of the smartest, most celebrated spots in the city. When the Rainbow Room reopened, Manhattan was also gifted this adjacent bar, with a wraparound outdoor roof terrace in the sky, at the top of the Rock. It’s elegant, transporting and stunning, but so are the prices – a negroni is £18.

Favourite drink: the Room with a View, which mixes rum, Cointreau, cider and nutmeg.

DRINK – The Skylark
Smokers get the best deal here, with an open-air terrace facing the Empire State. That’s not to say that the rest of this 30th-floor, wraparound glass box of a bar is shabby. There are huge sofas, attentive staff, unusual and truly superb £12 cocktails and spectacular views out past the tip of the Chrysler, to the Emery Roth-designed MetLife Building and down into Times Square.

Favourite drink: the Walnut Sazerac, with rye, walnut liquor, absinthe, bitters and candied walnuts. A rich, smooth and nutty revelation.

SLEEP – Ritz-Carlton New York
With Central Park basking in the height of summer, the Ritz-Carlton lets you stay closer to the foliage, pond and horse and carts than you could any other way, without a tent. The hotel is flawlessly elegant, with golden drapes, rich fabrics, plush upholstery and telescopes and bird-watching books in the Park View rooms. Upgrade to the Club Lounge for delicious buffets and gratis wine.

Favourite room: all of the Park View Rooms are great but 1410 has a particularly good sweep of Central Park.
