The Christmas Installation at Dennis Sever’s House in London starts in five days’ time. The museum is one of writer Sophie Dening’s top five sights in this winter’s guide to the capital. It’s also a great way to get into the festive mood in case the winter wonderland you have tickets to turns out to be a muddy field and a couple of bored elves.

Dennis Severs’ House

Uniquely spellbinding, this Georgian townhouse museum was created by the aesthetic visionary Dennis Severs during the 1980s, before Spitalfields was re-gentrified. Walk round in silence, soaking up domestic settings that are both authentic and imaginative, taking you back in time to the 18th and 19th centuries, replete with scents, sounds and a black cat. Book ahead for the Christmas Installation from 30 November to 5 January.
