There is one way to avoid getting fined £100 for posting a negative review of your hotel on TripAdvisor. Let a professional travel journalist pick a good one for you. The writers at Seasonal Cities select the best five hotels in their cities each season, covering budget, mid-range and luxury options. Below is one of my favourite budget hotel reviews, from Lee Marshall in Rome, for our Autumn 2014 guide to the city.

The Beehive

Make the most of shorter days by staying near Rome’s Termini station – a train or metro hop from the Colosseum, St Peter’s and out of town destinations like Orvieto and Tivoli. Set up in 1999 by an American couple, this eco-chic budget hotel with a garden terrace and organic café is like a hostel for design-conscious grown-ups. Rooms range from shared dorms to fun, jazzy classic doubles.

Favourite room: any of the ‘Sweets’ – light-filled doubles, some with balconies and en-suite bathrooms, which come in at the incredible price of £80 in high season.
