It’s just over three weeks until the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and our autumn 2014 writer in the city, Susan Paterson (www.susanpaterson.com.au), included it as one of the top five events of the season. It looks set to be a very interesting few days. I stayed on Bernauer Strasse earlier this year for three wonderful, rainy, days in Berlin and went and saw the metal posts which show where the wall used to run just up the road. I really like the idea of seeing the watchtowers and cycling the route of the wall, to get a completely different perspective.

‘This historic milestone will see celebrations, exhibitions and memorial events taking place on and around this date throughout the city. Tour through watchtowers and cycle the path of the Wall. Look for a helium-balloon light installation along the 12km border trail on the weekend of the 9th, as well as the reopening of the Bernauer Strasse documentation centre.’

On and around 9 November.
